Who Couples Counseling Is For
This is for couples who love each other—but lately, it doesn't feel easy.
Maybe you're arguing more than you used to, or it feels like every conversation turns into the same fight. One of you shuts down, the other pushes harder. Or maybe you're not really fighting—you're just kind of distant. Living together, managing life, but not really feeling like a team anymore.
This is for you if you've said things like:
- "We keep having the same argument over and over."
- "We just don't communicate well anymore."
- "It feels like we're roommates, not partners."
- "I don't know if we're okay… but I also don't know what else to try."
- "One of us is trying harder than the other."
Some couples come in because they're trying to fix things. Others come in because they're trying to figure out if they should stay, separate, or keep working on it—but they don't want to make that decision in the middle of conflict, stress, or confusion. That's where discernment counseling can also come in—we help you slow things down and get clarity instead of reacting from frustration or exhaustion.
And sometimes it's not crisis—it's just distance. You miss each other. You want things to feel lighter again. You want to laugh more, talk more, and stop feeling like everything takes effort.
How We Help
Our Approach to Couples Therapy
We help you slow things down so you can actually hear each other again—not just react, defend, or shut down.
Most couples are stuck in patterns they didn't realize they were building over time. We help you identify those cycles and learn how to respond differently so conversations don't keep escalating or shutting down.
Our work is informed by evidence-based couples approaches, including Gottman Method principles, along with systems-based and communication-focused therapy. The goal is to help you understand what's happening beneath the conflict and build tools that actually work outside of session—not just insight in the room.
What Sessions Look Like
A session is a space where both of you get to talk—and actually be heard.
We're not here to decide who is right. We're here to understand what's happening between you two when things go sideways.
We might slow down a recent argument, look at what each of you was really feeling underneath it, or practice saying things in a way the other person can actually receive. Sometimes we'll work on communication in real time, because most couples don't need more insight—they need different tools in the moment.
Discernment Counseling (For Couples Who Are Unsure)
Sometimes couples come in and one or both partners are not sure they want to stay in the relationship.
If that's where you are, discernment counseling gives you space to slow everything down and figure out:
- Do we want to try to repair this?
- Has too much happened to move forward?
- Or are we somewhere in between and just exhausted from the cycle?
This is not pressure to stay or leave—it's clarity space, especially when things feel emotionally stuck or overwhelming.
Issues We Address
“We Keep Having the Same Fight”
We help you figure out why the same argument keeps happening and what each of you is actually trying to say underneath it.
Communication Problems
Maybe one of you shuts down, the other gets louder, or nothing gets resolved. We help you break that cycle so conversations don't keep escalating or disappearing.
Emotional Distance / Feeling Disconnected
You might be living life together but feeling emotionally far apart. We work on rebuilding connection, understanding, and everyday closeness again.
Trust Issues / Relationship Hurt
Whether it's betrayal, dishonesty, or emotional hurt, we help you slow down and understand what repair could actually look like—if that's what you both want.
Big Life Stress Affecting Your Relationship
Kids, work stress, finances, family pressure—life gets heavy. We help you stop turning on each other when life is already overwhelming.
“We Don't Know What We Are Anymore” (Discernment Work)
If you're unsure whether to stay, separate, or keep trying, we help you get clarity without pressure, urgency, or emotional chaos driving the decision.
Why Couples Choose This Space
Couples often start to notice they:
- Argue less—or recover from arguments faster
- Actually feel heard instead of dismissed or misunderstood
- Understand what's really underneath conflict
- Stop repeating the same cycle over and over
- Feel more like a team again, even during stress
- Gain clarity about what they want moving forward
What to Expect
First Session
We start by hearing from both of you—what's been going on, what feels hard, and what you each hope could change. There's no pressure to have the "right" story—just honesty about where things are right now.
Ongoing Sessions
We slow things down in real time. We look at patterns as they happen, not just talk about them after the fact. You'll learn how to communicate differently in session and outside of it.
Session Length
Sessions are typically 53 minutes, usually weekly or based on your needs.
Progress
We check in regularly on whether communication is improving, whether arguments feel less intense, and whether you feel more connected—or clearer about next steps.
Insurance & Investment
We accept the following insurance plans: Aetna, Cigna/Evernorth, Curative, Sana Benefits, First Health, UnitedHealthcare, Scott & White Health Plan, and UMR. For clients using out-of-network benefits, we can provide a superbill for possible reimbursement.
Self-pay rates vary by clinician and license level. Couples and family sessions generally range from $100 to $300 per session. A limited number of reduced-fee sliding scale spots may be available based on need. We also accept FSA and HSA cards.
Schedule a Couples Consultation
If things have felt tense, distant, or just stuck for a while, you don't have to keep trying to figure it out alone. When you're ready, you can schedule a Couples Consultation to get started.
