Addiction & Recovery Therapy in McKinney, TX

We're not here to shame you into change. That approach has historically done… nothing helpful.
A scatter of white round pills and red, yellow, and blue medicine capsules on a neutral background, illustrating a sticky coping cycle. Shame-free addiction and recovery therapy support from evidence-based mental health professionals at The Desired Journey Counseling.

Who This Is For

This is for the person who:

  • Has a complicated relationship with something (alcohol, substances, food, scrolling, shopping, etc.)
  • Keeps saying "I can stop whenever I want" with increasing uncertainty
  • Has tried to quit… more than once… okay maybe several times
  • Uses it to take the edge off stress, anxiety, or just existing
  • Feels fine… until suddenly it's not fine
  • Is tired of the cycle but also tired of thinking about the cycle

At your worst:

  • "Why do I keep doing this?"
  • "I was doing so good… what happened?"
  • "I'm fine… I just need to get it together"
  • "I don't even feel like myself anymore"

And underneath: This isn't a character issue. It's a coping strategy that stopped working.

What's Going On

Your Brain Likes Quick Relief (It's Not Being Dramatic, It's Efficient)

Unfortunately, it picks shortcuts that aren't always great long-term.

Stress + Emotions Need Somewhere to Go

If they don't get processed, they usually get numbed.

The Cycle Is Sticky

Stress, use, relief, guilt, stress, repeat. Your brain is like: "Ah yes, our favorite playlist."

Shame Makes It Worse

Because nothing improves when you're also beating yourself up.

How We Help

We don't do punishment-based recovery. You've probably tried that already. We help you:

  • Understand what's driving the pattern (not just the behavior)
  • Build coping strategies that don't fall apart under stress
  • Interrupt the shame cycle (it's doing way too much)
  • Learn emotional regulation skills that actually stick
  • Create realistic change—not perfection-based change

What Sessions Look Like

Sessions feel like:

  • Honest conversations without judgment
  • "Okay, what was happening right before this?"
  • Looking at patterns instead of blaming yourself
  • Building actual alternatives that don't feel like punishment
  • Celebrating progress that isn't perfect

No lectures. No shame. No side-eye energy.

FAQS

Questions You Might Be Carrying

A few things people often wonder before reaching out.
Do I have to stop before starting therapy?
Nope.
Are you going to judge me?
No. That would be extremely unhelpful.
What if I relapse?
Then we talk about it and keep going—not restart your entire identity.
Is this just substance use?
Nope—anything compulsive or coping-based can be part of this work.
Can people actually change this pattern?
Yes. Not overnight, but absolutely.
Do I have to commit to total abstinence on day one to work with you?
Not at all. We meet you exactly where you are. For some people, the goal is total abstinence; for others, it’s harm reduction, cutting back, or simply figuring out why a habit has taken over. We don't drop ultimatums on you in session one. Our priority is helping you understand the pattern and regain control at a pace that feels sustainable, not forcing you into a box that doesn't fit.
Is what we talk about confidential, even if it involves illegal substances or workplace concerns?
Yes, absolutely. What happens in our sessions stays in our sessions. As licensed therapists, we are bound by strict legal and ethical confidentiality laws. Admitting to using illegal substances, drinking too much, or struggling with habits that affect your daily life does not trigger any reporting. The only legal exceptions to confidentiality are if you are a danger to yourself, a danger to someone else, or if child/elder abuse is disclosed. Your privacy is entirely safe here.
Can I bring my partner or a family member to a session if I need extra support?
Yes, if you want them there. While our focus on this page is individual therapy for you, recovery doesn't happen in a vacuum. If there is a specific session where you feel having your partner, parent, or a trusted loved one in the room would help you communicate or build a better support team at home, we can absolutely loop them in for a session. This is your time, and we use it however it best supports your stability.
